     It was the common commercial variety at one time. Now it is the cavendish, which is more resistant to disease.

     It's difficult to breed bananas too, which is why it has been hard to create better resistance.
     The only banana I grow is FHIA-23. One reason I like it, is it's a nice height, you can cut the whole bunch off without needing a ladder.
