     For some transcoding I found cvlc to be wildly faster and less demanding than ffmpeg. The options and parameters are no less opaque and difficult to remember though.

     I suppose upgrading from my old 4-core Athlon II could conceivably make a difference. Performance improvement-wise, that is.
