@lain @sun copyright was a cool idea back when it was introduced but now it's almost exclusively used to extort common folk. -

@lain strictly speaking I think the only software that mandatorily should be FOSS is the OS. -

@Paradox @hj @sun I think this is an idea without foundation. Either IP is property or not. I don’t think it is. -

I like the idea of people being able to make a cool new thing and make money on it for a while until the market is flooded with copycats and improvizers that make it harder to make money on the original.Or maybe that's not a problem anymore, and it used to be.
The problem is abuse by people who have lots of money, as usual.

Ok, let's say it's not, for the sake of argument.
Do you think the problem I mentioned exists, should be addressed, and if so, do you have a suggestion for it?I don't super care about it being property or not, I just care about giving people the ability to make art and live good. I think maybe classifying it as such made doing that easier to deal with.

@Paradox @hj @sun there’s zero problem making money with software without copyright, most software in the world is bespoke business software that runs on premise so copyright doesn’t matter at all. -

I did forget the OP was about software copyright.
That may be so, as a virtue of the culture.lainy likes this. -

Yeah but which among them is a reliable method that will earn the artist what they deserve while still allowing people to publish variants commercially? -

@Paradox @hj @sun that’s why I say there is no foundation to this way of thinking, property doesn’t depend on “I want my friends to have more money”. -

@Paradox @lain @hj @sun one of the real issues is that law is exceptionally slanted in favor of capital, so its possible and quite common to be legally in the right but unable to meaningfully enforce it.
IP was created so publishers had something to own and hoard. its still doing that, it's just not doing the other shit they made up to make it sound like a good idea (protecting artists from things.)
once more if i just steal it to read it they say i'm a pirate :blobfoxpirate: but if sam altman does it he's a visionary hero
tl;dr rule of law itself is a failure :blobcatgooglybadumtss: -
