   My parents visited me for a month and along the more memorable moments of cultural translation were when:

   - my dad asked me what it means when someone says ‘she’s a 10’, then was disappointed that we aren’t rating people on how good they are as people instead of how attractive

   - I found myself explaining the basic premise of Scientology when we were in Hollywood

   - sadly I found myself having to ask Siri to convert back to metric to me, which means I am now a degenerate

     I actually know A LOT about Scientology (it is one of my special interests, as a cult history enthusiast) so this conversion was a little longer than anyone wanted it to be

     @skinnylatte I knew a guy whose dad once disparaged Scientology on a web forum back in the 90s. Shortly thereafter every car on their block had a Scientology pamphlet on it. Coincidence? I think not.

     @skinnylatte you're not the degenerate. I'm still salty that I learned metric in grade school in America in the 80s because we were supposed to transition "soon" and have never been comfortable with Imperial measures (how many hogsheads in a furlong, who the fuck knows) but have to use them to fit in, if someone says "it's 10ft away" I have to either ignore it or mentally convert (about 3m) and then I can visualize it.
