   @nberlat the ML system was not optimized to help you, make you happier or better informed, have deeper or broader friendships and relationships and work connections.

   You may have noticed how hard it was to find posts you'd seen before, or getting nudged into counterproductive interactions.

   The ML is and was optimized for getting you to stay on the site and click ads.

   I think ML is going to be important for the ActivityPub network, but it has to be under our control and serving our purposes.

     the algorithm also helped you find interesting people. click on a trending topic, you'd often find people you didn't know discussing things you didn't know much about.

     a lot of folks seem to think that no algorithm is good. I'm not so sure.

     The algorithm was part of what made twitter such a great source for news; trending topics told you what other people were talking about and created a way to keep abreast of politics and culture.
