   @MojoBob A lot of the posts you see aren't written using Mastodon, but completely different software with much higher limits.

     I have a question about Mastodon:

     I often see posts that go on for quite a while, but when I post I am limited to about 500 (?) characters.

     Is the character limit an instance-specific setting? Do you have to be a Special Person to be able to type more?
