I thought everybody knew phones don't really turn off, but I keep hear people online countering good protest security advice with "just turn it off".

"Off" is best described as a low-power state, even for Android. The radio (which has a built-in CPU) isn't disconnected from the battery.

What should you do with your phone if you're protesting or whatever? Leave it at home; or put it in a tested Faraday bag if you take it with you.

      By the way...
MOST electronics don't turn off these days. If it has a mic, assume it can hear you. If you haven't verified it has no mic by opening it, and it's smart, assume it can hear you.

Got a Google home? Switch the mic off switch. Now say "OK Google".
"The mic is off!", it says.
Oh? How did it know you said anything?!

Careful what you say! The devices are always listening. Only talk plans in a space with no gadgets.

Here's a horror story for you...
I have my smart TV in "dumb mode". It doesn't have my WiFi info. (Getting this mode is a pain in the ass, btw).
Recently, I noticed the sleep timer warning pop up changed. It used to just have a count down and cancel button.
Last time, it had a second button with more options.
...how did it get a new set of features if it's not on my wifi?

Thankfully, this one has no mic. I checked.
