Tried & failed to convert my Kindle books to ePub via Calibre (something to with my kindle books being a newer format or some such🤷🏻♀️).

I’m still inclined to buy a non-kindle e-reader when my current Kindle dies, although losing my 700 strong library of books will pain me 😩.

Currently I’m thinking of getting the Kobo app for my tablet & making any new ebook purchases on there going forward, with a view to buying a Kobo when my kindle dies.

Is there any reason that’s a bad call?

I'd recommend Onyx Boox (even though I'm ticked new models no longer have Play as Optional, and it's enabled out of the box). It's basically just an Android tablet with an e-paper display. The books you rescued can open in either the included app or another (personally I like KOreader), and the books you couldn't rescue can be accessed in the Kindle app.

I’ll check that out, thank you. The flexibility of using the Kindle app and others but with e-paper definitely sounds like the thing

If you wanted to, you could have the included app or KOreader for DRM-free books, Kindle app, Nook app, Kobo app, and basically be able to read any ebook from anywhere.

I haven't used it in ages (Autistic burn out really tankes my reading) but the app for ebooks from the library also runs on Boox devices.

      Just some epaper tips -
Don't get discouraged if an app looks like shit the first try. Boox devices have a bunch of per app settings to tweak to make an app made for LCD/OLED display nicely on epaper. (Even Spotify displayed fine after some tweaking! Got some reading music!)
And some ebook apps, including Kindle, have page turn animations. Disable the animation in the app's settings and you'll solve quite a bit of irritation.

      Bonus tip:
If you are someone who carries your e-reader often, grab an app to store your loyalty cards. (I recommend Catima). They scan REAL easy when using an epaper device!

      Fun Bonus Bonus tip:
If you like KOreader, and still want your screen to show the book cover when in sleep -
Open KOreader, tell it to store the covers for sleep/lock in a folder where the wallpapers are kept, and open a book (so it writes one). In Boox settings, pick that for your sleep screen. It'll look wrong when you set it, but it does display fine during sleep once you have opened another book.

If you need any help finding these settings, just ask. I'll hop on my device so I can find it. It's one of those things I don't remember the details of labels and specific icons unless I'm actually doing it.
