What's to stop Musk, who's already tried meddling with German elections, from seizing Zelenskyy's, or any other European leader's X account, and posting something with dire geopolitical consequences? We're way past the point where it's wise for European leaders and institutions to rely on a presence on X—and other US platforms are not a good long-term solution either. More should follow the example of the @EUCommission and provide their updates directly, without middlemen, through the fediverse.
Thanks. But the handle? ec.social-network.europa.eu? WTF! I would like to have a European response to Meta and X. Think big. A @ europa.eu handle. Just imagine KajaKallas@europa.eu
@Gargron What you say is the reasonable, right thing to do. We all wish that'd happen. But, for reasons that escape my comprehension, they won't do it. And if they were gonna do it, they would have done before now.
@Gargron@EUCommission simply put, there needs to be a strong movement against this new American style fascism, which isn't so much different then Nazi style fascism. I just don't think we are quite there yet. Not enough people have been disinfeanchised by all of this, yet!
@Gargron@EUCommission Oh, i'm 90% positive he's using the entire twitter user data analytics on a rebooted Cambridge Analytica Ver. 2 to try and bend elections. He's got something shaking & baking his "project dojo" so bad it causes local blackouts regularly, and somehow I doubt with the types of LLM specialists he's got roped off on his 'special project' they're dinking with his cars visual recognition problems.
@Gargron@EUCommission as someone who loves Musk, this really is the better way. Can't live one someone else's platform when communicating is that important.
@Gargron there’s a broader discussion to be made about why there are no social media companies from the EU, and the dominant platforms are all from the US. China at least has their own homegrown alternatives. Feels like the EU indirectly dug their own grave by making the business landscape so unfriendly towards social media businesses.
@Gargron@EUCommission It is a shame that something like this can happen. Seeing Elon Musk on the AfD wall supporting the german right wing is horrible. Built a presence on X and expose their lies. Cannot belive that so many people fall for their populistic behaviour.
@Gargron@EUCommission we should seriously consider the concept of European social media platforms which would be administered by an independently elected body made up of representative states. The infrastructure and social reach already exists in the Eurovision platform via the EBU and could be subscription based or funded by state media.
@Gargron@EUCommission That's probably for the public to decide. However, I think Elon Musk is becoming overly concerned with issues that don't contribute to US growth. He should focus on his role in the Department of Government Efficiency and avoid meddling in other countries' affairs.
@Gargron@EUCommission I imagine the almost immediate shutdown of X in Europe if this happened would prevent him but expecting behaviour based on some rational self interest has long gone out the window
