@jiub @feld just so you know, people turned to trump because they saw or interacted with people like you.

@mischievoustomato @feld @jiub i mean, i interact with jiub rather frequently and to-date i still don't think i've turned to trump

@mischievoustomato @feld @jiub yeah, but if you look at overall turnout i think that can be attributed to dems picking the worst person possible for their ticket. someone who supports genocides and promises more of the same stagnation that the last four years yielded (at least for people like me).
I did vote for harris but i 100% do not blame people who stayed home. i had enough of a struggle even getting out of bed to go vote due to my own depression over the state of US politics

@wyatt @feld @jiub true, that is a good point too. But the phenomenon I talked about is very true, at least from what I've talked to people over the years since 2020~. People see stuff like what OP posted and it just sounds plain nonsensical and honestly just insane to the core.

@wyatt @feld @jiub well, radicalization goes both ways. I'm not similar since I only really care about people I know (some family, friends).

@mischievoustomato @feld @jiub yes, i do see this phenomenon too. Often it is used to stigmatize minorities who have been swept under the rug by our current policies and thus have nothing to lose.
There is something to be said for "finding things people have in common to bring them closer," for sure. But to be honest I used to be one of those people who distanced myself from the most radical/outspoken people. And eventually i started wondering what would lead someone to feel that way. And finding the answers to that radicalized me in turn.

@wyatt @feld @jiub > also for some reason nazis being nazis in public hasn't seemed to turn people away from trump
not taking into account what you consider nazism, plainly it could mean people find that palatable

@mischievoustomato @feld @jiub also for some reason nazis being nazis in public hasn't seemed to turn people away from trump, so i'm not sure how much i really can agree with the premise anymore

I don't know. Coming from where I am, I'd say it'd be more utopic (is that even a word) if everyone had a gun for self defense. "An armed society is a polite society", after all.

@mischievoustomato @feld @jiub it will be if they have to shoot a cop
the answer to everything shouldn't be "more guns."
