i think that people forget that an important fact about the nintendo 64 is that it is a device designed for you to have fun with by playing video games on it

this isn't cute or heartwarming. nintendo 64s only run linux when they are VERY DISTRESSED

@linear Heh Linux on an N64, I'd more expect IRIX or NetBSD. -

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me IRIX would be really tough for a lot of reasons even if we had the source code or used a leaked codebase
netbsd, iirc, historically has issues with 64-bit mips toolchains, but probably would run fine with a 32-bit kernel and userlandHaelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this. -

@linear Yeah I somewhat wish whoever holds copyright for IRIX now (HP?) would open at least the code that they have rights on. -

@lanodan @linear I don’t know if there’s a modern equivalent to this but sgi irix “n32” abi was very nice because you got 32-bit pointers for small data footprint but 64-bit registers. Given the memory size of the N64 … you’ll be wanting as much efficiency as you can find.

@acsawdey@fosstodon.org @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me modern mips still has the exact same set of ABIs as IRIX did, and nintendo 64 linux is equally useless in all of O32, N32, and N64 ABIs :)

@lanodan @linear I think you’d be better off fixing the toolchain … irix on a little r5000 box back in the day wasn’t great. 30 years of development in Linux or bsd since then.
