I wanted to try a very highly regard but very gentrified Thai spot in Portland and.. it’s good, but I can cook it and also their Very Very Spicy papaya salad is Not Spicy At All. Like it has tomatoes and no chillies. Hehe

However it is light years better than SF’s gentrified Thai food which I can not deal with at all

It helps me to think about it as Thai inspired.
I guess I’m also used to HiSo Thai food in Bangkok (which is its own thing) which has a similar vibe, but of course far deeper and more complex flavors

@rhiannonstone thank you! those are pretty good. Same thing as the place I went to, very gentrified, above average; but I prefer more hyper regional Thai places like the ones in LA / Oakland that are a little heavier on the spice and fermentation, but I wouldn’t be unhappy if I went to places like these if I lived here!

@skinnylatte I know I'm coming with a different palate & standard here and you've probably got plenty of sources for recommendations, but just in case it's useful: Paadee is my very favorite Thai in Portland, with Hat Yai as a close second. If you ever try either of those I'll be curious what you think (and won't be offended at all if you hate it. :))
