    Just surfacing this to my main TL:

    Trump is old and in poor health. Odds are as good as not he doesn’t even live to try for that Third Rei-…um, I mean, third term. When he dies, a new round of all hell will break loose.

      @IveyJanette@mastodon.social @LinuxAndYarn@mastodon.social Yes, Putin, Musk, and several less flamboyant oligarchs whose names aren’t as close to the surface. Vance is apparently Thiel putting his hat in the ring, for example. Trump is old and in poor health; there’s a whole lot of people jockeying for position when he finally dies off. And yes, it's going to lead to conflict: war, or economic destruction, or heaven knows what. We need to get this whole authoritarian gambit to implode as fast as possible; the longer it stay alive, the more it takes us down with it.

      If and when Trump dies, what happens next depends on:

      - how much authoritarian power the oligarchs pulling Trump’s strings have managed to consolidate at that point,

      - how strong public outrage is at that point, and

      - how well we’ve managed to organize ourselves.

      Form those human connections now. Build the capacity for action. Practice action, get used to it. Help the coup implode. Help make what they’re doing fail if you’re in a position to do so.

      I don’t know what’s coming, but I know that every inch of that work now will pay dividends.

      @hasani
      I think that’s exactly right •if• there hasn’t yet been sufficient consolidation of power. There’s a point where popularity is no longer necessary, because whoever controls the levers controls everything (cf Putin).

      Thus my list of three above. In a situation where consolidation of power is incomplete, public outrage is hight, and the capacity for public action is hight, then your scenario wins out.

      @inthehands The only fly in the ointment here is that Trump has ensured that there is no successor. There is no number two. I believe he has publicly expressed this. After Jim Jones left the earth, his entire movement collapsed
