What I don't understand is why the Mastodon app only has so many characters, but the Fedilab app almost always gives you enough room to tell your story or observation or opinion. No idea why the character limit is not generous and universal. Are we really paying by the letter or something? I don't understand any of it!

@shannonpersists mastodon is obsessed with being twitter. Other fedi software lets you set a much higher character limit. -

@shannonpersists It's controlled on a per-server basis. Your server has a 500 character limit. I have a private server where I set it to 5000.
That server is the largest. They probably reason that allowing longer posts would eat database space too quickly for their budget.
