@britt It's honestly the best. You can install lots of software, like Plex, CMS, LAMP stack besides all the milions of ways to backup etc. https://www.synology.com/en-us/dsm/packages
It has apps such as Photos, Video etc so you can backup your media and play them back on it. It's a whole ecosystem! I totally recommend. Mine's been going strong for a few years now :D I usually run a backup each week and then run a job to move the backups to an external USB for a secondary backup. (I have a DS220+)
@binarydigit cool! Talk to me about your NAS setup w/ Synology. I’m considering getting one for us.
@EighthLayer It's not a photo service, just a backup and sync service. Their mobile app let's you use "camera upload" which pops your photos into a folder in your account. Same as Dropbox does. It's great but definitely not the same as Google Photos - no intelligent searching or any of that.
@binarydigit Very interested to hear how you get on with Mega.io and their photo service. Haven’t heard of them before, but I’m also looking into ways to leave Google Photos behind and it’s not easy to find something that compares.
@EighthLayer I agree. Only MacOS Photos is better but I want to remove myself from big tech little by little. Immich is offered through PikaPods for easy install but is expensive. Maybe check out https://ente.io? I heard they are good but I haven't taken the plunge.
@binarydigit Ah okay that makes sense. It’s hard to give up the kind of features Google Photos provides. I’ve been trying to find a service that offers similar features and at a similar price point, but I just don’t think there is one.
I was looking at self hosting Immich, but I found that a pain to even get going, especially for someone not overly experienced with Linux.
@britt Yes yes yes! It'll be perfect for that. And you can still sync some services that aren't necessarily big tech but useful, like webdav or S3 compatible storage. I still need to try to figure out what I'll use for myself. Here are some screenshots
@binarydigit awesome!!! Thank you :)) I’m excited to be able to free us from the ‘techbro cloud hell’ we’re stuck in. I do have a small plex server running but having something like this would take it to the next level. It would be great to have somewhere to store all my ebooks, too. Music, photos… all the things!
