     @wowaname there are a lot of reasons to not want this yeah. also like, the postal service is one of the very few services that the federal government is explicitly tasked with running, there are very few government services that are as defensible as mail

     The constitution explicitly allows the congress to establish a post office, it doesn't require it though. Same deal with the patent office.

     @guizzy @wowaname I would not necessarily be 100% against it but there would have to be a legal chartering by the government that requires it to deliver mail to every tiny rock in the USA and not say "it's not profitable to deliver mail there"

     @sun @wowaname After Poste Canada's employees fucking over everyone during the last holidays by going on strike (timed specifically to interfere with the holidays), and the private carriers reliably and professionally doing their job over the same period, I can't say I would be that sad if mail delivery was entirely privatized here.

     Sorry if I came off as pedantic, I interpreted 'tasked' to mean 'required', but I can see now it could also mean 'delegated to' in this context.
