As I <remember> the specs, they state that ID's may be omitted if it is sufficient for an object to exist that is embedded in a parent object that has an ID.

But then you probably should set it to null.
@pfefferle @evan @johnonolan @linos "null" id is a mistake and should not be explicitly set like that. just leave it out. the only `id` you need is the top-level one.
