"When three volunteers tested the government's nuclear shelter advice, they didn't expect such disturbing results. The women became listless and reported hallucinations after just 48 hours in their makeshift fallout room. "

@fuzzface @sts Hence the intense debate in 1960-1961 about brining guns into your fallout shelter. An implicit awareness that after nuclear war, the enemy would be your neighbors and not the "commies"

@bojacobs @sts I could be wrong, but it seemed the focus of Civil Defense during this era was on “you can survive and things would be ok again” but when seriously considered it became “we may survive, most are dead, everything is in ruins, and ok will not return for generations, if ever.” I also question the belief that one week was enough for anything approaching safety.

@sts "The Times reported that they managed six-and-a-half uncomfortable hours in the core before emerging, suffering from cramps.

Then apathy set in. Though described as ‘women of intelligence and determination’ and despite having brought pastimes with them, the women didn’t do anything during that first day. ‘They did nothing but exist; the minimum of cooking, but nothing else whatever’, the organisers admitted. The rapid onset of listlessness in the three volunteers after their stint in the ‘core’ took everyone by surprise. ‘Cold, miserable, aching and stiff’, the women chatted a little, ate, took painkillers and slept."
