   My parents live in a country that is 30 miles wide.

   Quite frequently we find ourselves in a completely different part of California and they say, wide eyed, we are *still* in California?? Later this week we hitch a ride with someone to go five or six hours south and we will *still* be in California. It will still be California for another couple of hours after that.

     the first time I went to backcountry Australia I wanted to stop to take a photo of the nothingness because I had never seen a a place with no street lighting for endless miles

     I had a friend visit me (Sydney suburb Australia) from Singapore.
     Her plan for the week was to visit Brisbane, Canberra, and Melbourne.

     When I pointed out that they were:
     - 10+ hours drive North
     - 4+ hours drive West, and
     - 10+ hours drive South
     she really couldn't comprehend, so we started with the Canberra trip. Again, she couldn't believe that I wanted to leave at ungodly o'clock before sunrise, and it only took about 30 minutes once we got onto a highway, that she started saying "You really mean just drive and drive and drive … for FOUR HOURS?!? Why is it so far away?"
