   The security bugfix iOS release 18.3.1 "fixes" the very useful bug in Apple Intelligence that stops it working if the AI language is different from the system language—and re-enables Apple Intelligence.

   This is #enshittification in action, at Apple. (I turned AI off because DO NOT WANT, EVER, PERIOD.)

     @cstross Do we need a different word from #enshittification to describe forcible insertion of unwanted #AI features into products or services? As I understand it, @pluralistic’s term describes a quite specific multi-step process, not simply "making things worse”.

     I propose “encruftening” for "adding unrequested and undesirable features to an existing product”, which covers "AI", blockchain & whatever other horrors they have in store for us. Other suggestions?

     @cstross Yeah, time to start looking at Android options. I may just bite the bullet and look for a phone that just does calls and text/SMS, assuming I can find something to use to hold my music collection to listen to as desired.

     choosing a different master is not the answer
     
     ios and android are both equally enshittifyable. that's their problem for us.
     
     the answer is software that we control, individually and collectively, so that it can serve us.
     
     it needs to be malleable to us, the users, not those who wish to use it to control us.
