   Getting around to watching last week's Real Time, and the same people bitching about Maher's views on trans people apparently skipped the part when he refused to be gaslit by a Trump supporter later in the episode about Trump's weaponization of the DOJ and pushed back hard.

   People, this is why you need to watch alt media. Maher, unlike anyone on CNN, Fox, or MSNBC, has nuanced views and gets the bad guys to say stupid things confidently and publicly.

     And, I totally get it.

     I can't stand Maher's proselytization on Israel or how he talks about trans people either. It bugs the shit out of me, but it's important to hear things that aren't being echoed back to you on repeat so you too can understand people who don't agree with you.

     Hell, you all thought the last election would actually be close because none of the news sources you consume actually provide for alternative viewpoints.

     @artemis I totally get it. Plus he's a bit of a douche.

     I just think that, regardless of his personal politics, his show adds a lot to the conversation and actually makes me think.

     Maher's anti-Muslim sentiments are what first made him unbearable to me, and that was back when I was still taking tiny baby steps on recognizing xenophobia...like, I was still very conservative, and even then I found Maher's bigotry offensive.

     I have a hard time giving him the time of day because of that.

     @artemis Absolutely.

     I get mine from Fedi, the AP, sometimes Al Jazeera, and some leftist alt media on Youtube like Hasan Abi.

     Maher's is the only media I watch that has straight-up conservative viewpoints, but they're usually very intelligent in their discourse and I find it interesting and beneficial, even if I don't agree.

     It can be worth interacting with media like that at least to have an awareness of how other groups of people are receiving and processing information.

     I have been finding the difference between the level of knowledge and discourse shared on Fedi and the level of knowledge even among my fairly well-educated friends "IRL" really jarring lately. It's not even "an echo chamber"—it's just confusing that others get their info and form their opinions in such different ways.
