   I asked why Invidious seems broken and the community answered: Google blocks Invidious server IPs. One person, @FrankBlack78 , responded suggesting FreeTube or NewPipe:

   https://freetubeapp.io/ - desktop client

   https://newpipe.net/ - for Android

   Honestly, these seem like much better solutions since they then rely exclusively on the user's and Google's bandwidth; no need for servers with big fat pipes to the internet.

   They offer full interfaces, with search!

   Of course, yt-dlp is great too.

     @FrankBlack78 I just tried freetube. works great! will try newpipe whenever i want to use YT on my phone

     @libreleah @FrankBlack78 The thing I liked about invidious was it was quite lightweight on the end user, and last I tried Freetube was a bit much for my poor laptop. I found the project https://github.com/user234683/youtube-local works well for me as it creates a similar lightweight interface to invidious but run locally.

     @FrankBlack78 sometimes yt-dlp will handle those age restricted videos anyway, so you could just copy the link and download it, or perhaps stream it in mpv

     @libreleah Cool. Glad it helped. What doesn't work with FreeTube is watching videos with an age restriction on the YT-side. Normally this isn't a problem for me. Had it once with a movie review I think. Besides of that, I don't use an Google Account anymore for watching YT.

     @libreleah @FrankBlack78 there's also a fork of newpipe called tubular, i highly recommend it: https://github.com/polymorphicshade/Tubular

     it integrates sponsorblock, which newpipe upstream has refused.

     tldr: their main concern is privacy and they consider embedded sponsor segments ethical.

     maybe they also don't want to anger video creators as much. personally i agree more with louis rossmann. i'm sick of useless or actually scammy ads with no accountability taken by the creators. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Udn7WNOrvQ
