@foone For anyone wondering (like I was a while ago) why all the cool parallel interfaces went away and everything is serial now: Apparently the answer is crosstalk. 😔
The signals on the parallel wires interfere with each other at higher speeds and longer lengths, so it's faster and more practical to just send info serially.

@foone @casandro And wow those seem to be pretty expensive for what they are. -

@foone Ironically multi-port serial cards look just like that. :)

@casandro @foone Yeah but effectively much cheaper to keep a bunch of USB-Serial adapters plugged together on a USB-Hub.
Although luckily so far I haven't had problems with USB-Serial adapters but I've mostly used them for serial-consoles on devboards. -

@lanodan @foone Well considering that it can save you from having to waste a lot of PCI-E slots, the price is quite OK.
Compared to USB to serial device, these are a _lot_ more reliable since they by-pass USB. -

@casandro @foone Well I still have annoying bugs with USB but more the other way around, like:
- sd card reader just getting stuck in a bad state if left plugged for a while, including integrated ones for 3.5" bays or laptops
- mouse/trackball also sometimes just hanging -

@lanodan @foone You were extremely lucky then. Anything beyond keyboard and mouse I have crashes regularly because the bus resets on any tiny static discharge in the room.
