   🖖 The Replicator in Star Trek would probably be the most disruptive technology and ironically, it likely wouldn’t exist in our current society.

   Considering how wealthy investors resist the idea of free renewable energy, the Replicator would be something society might reject. Why? Because if everything could be replicated, there would be no profits to be made.

     @obrhoff Interpolating from the current society: You could only use your replicator with a monthly subscription service. There'd be different subscription services available, each only offering an incomplete subset of the "recipies" you need.

     @claudius Tbf, the initial version was pretty perfect, like making a Martini in TNG Season 1.

     They kinda dialed it down and slowly reintroduced capitalism up until Picard, where he „owns“ a chateau, produces wine, and employs slaves, uhh, I mean, refugees.

     @obrhoff it is so revolutionary that even in #StarTrek itself they need it to not be perfect. Repeatedly, food from it gets mocked. It can't do some chemicals. It conveniently can't do weapons or whole starships. Lesser civilisations only get simpler versions that only do water...
     Items that then get traded...
