The big ones have precise control AND fast movement. Good ones feel smoother. And... I don't have to dedicate half my desk to moving a fucking pointer or reticle.
Plus, pop the ball out and you have a toy to play with!

And don't even get me started on that awful awful pickup and set-down mouse maneuver! 😖
      That is the WORST!

No, wait, that is 2nd worst. WORST is the texture of mousepad rubbing against the side of my hand!

My pointer device preferences from fave to least fave...

      1 - large trackball
      2 - Thumb trackball if I must
      3 - trackstick
      4 - trackpad
      5 - touchscreen

      "But what about gaming?"
Game controller, trackball, or I'll go find something else to do.
(A tiny list of exceptions - I'll play Bejewled or Hill Climb Racing on touchscreen)

I agree, but can TOLLERATE batteries.
And there is one use case I prefer wireless... When I send my computer display over to the TV, or otherwise use a keyboard and/or trackball on my lap.

I have a kickass Periboard for that! It's a keyboard with a little bitty trackball in the upper corner that works great for non-precision computing on my bed using my TV as the display

@hellomiakoda Ooh, thank you! I've been searching for new keyboards to try out (preferably wireless mechanical ones) and Perixx do actually have keyboards with non-US keyboard layouts for us Europeans!

      @seq
Just to be clear, the Periboard I have isn't a mech. I typically hate domes, but in this one use case, the small size and built in itty bitty trackball was more important.

I'm quite partial to the big grey, wired, non "slim" Kensington. It's not open hardware, but works on basic drivers in Linux.

@hellomiakoda hmm, I've never really tried a trackball. Do you have a particular model or maker to recommend? Bonus points if it's open hardware 🤗

No no, not the slim. The one before the slim, with a scro ring.

@hellomiakoda damn, mouse isn't even on that list?

You're like one of two people I know who actually prefer a trackpad over a mouse, I always get super annoyed when I have to use a trackpad for more than a few minutes, what do you mean I have to fling my finger back and forth a billion times to get the cursor to where I want it? 😭

@hazelnot That depends on the ball.
Old old style ones, click and drag the scrollbar like it's 1992.
Thumb trackballs usually have a scroll wheel.
Mine, both my big one (pictured) and my shittier one in the basement, have a ring around the ball for scrolling. This is my favorite method.
The Slimblade from Kensington, looks like a futuristic of mine, you twist the ball.
I have also seen one where left button is a touch pad, but touching (one finger) is scroll, pressing still clicks.

@hellomiakoda also partially unrelated but, how do you actually scroll on a trackball, I'm really curious about that :o

@hazelnot I am easily disregulated by colliding with desk objects while mousing, and most mousing surfaces are a texture issue on tht part of my hand.
Outside of gaming, I uses to use MouseKeys, and accessability mode to use the numpad as arrows to move the mouse, back on the family computer on my more testure sensative days.

@hazelnot Picking up and putting the mouse down to go further also really pisses me off.
I have never had a big work space for my computer.
When I first used a trackball, I loved it! Infinite pointer movement within the footprint of the trakcball! No snagged cables, no texture against my hand, none of that!
And... Once you are used to a trackball, the precision of a large finger driven ball is abaoutely unmatched by any mouse I've used. (Thumb balls don't offer as much precision)
