My best friend just went to a new-to-her medical clinic today to get seen for issues she is having with her jaw. It was a referral from her GP. The clinic wanted money upfront to take her on as a new client without seeing her first. This clinic is a medical clinic that takes insurance and Medicare and this was a referral. She and her daughter are on an ACA plan.

Dayum. I'm insured to the teeth, and that happened to me at a spinal surgeon. There by GP referral for janky disks. Made the appt anyway, went in and read the cashier the riot act, not quietly, with a full waiting room in audience. The practice manager appeared, and they saw me without advance payment.
Sometimes a public shaming is a motivator. I was very fortunate. They could have easily called security, but I think my argument was compelling, and it was easier to quietly waive advance payment.
2015. Do not advise now.

@TheEddieShow This is because they are not sure they will be paid / reimbursed. The Healthcare industry just changed overnight.
The ACA is in trump's sites. It will go before Medicare and no one is talking about it even though it is now directly impacting patients.
