   Also, some TVs have zoom to correct the lettered pillar boxing that happens when a 16 by 9 source ended up letter boxes for 4 by 3.

   Handbrake's auto cropping of letter boxes and pillar boxes is my favorite video tool feature of all time. My god do I love it.
   ...except when some douch nozzle stuck a channel bug in the pillar box area and fucked up the auto crop!

     BTW - If you have letter boxed or pillar boxed video, you will almost always get best results lopping the bars off and letting your player box as needed to fit.

     Handbrake is a handy tool for converting video and ripping DVDs (it is difficult to rip BluRay in handbrake, and most discs fail entirely).
     It let's you pick what audio tracks to keep, what subtitles and caption tracks to keep, change the resolution, correct videos stored in bad aspect, crop videos, auto crop bars... It's my go to for ripping DVDs, bringing old DVR recordings to a modern format, and otherwise prepping content to be stored on my local plex server.
