Any #HarukiMurakami fans here? I do not like to call myself "Harukist" as they say in Japan, but I've been reading him since I was 13, so...it's been almost 35 years! I do find his stories problematic viewed from modern lens and many people are not into his almost magic realism stuff... but I still love his books. My favourite is "Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World" and "Dance, Dance, Dance" #reading #books

@Yukari His book of short stories is just amazing.
I'm hoping to get to the point some day where I can read them in Japanese. -

@Yukari I have a shelf full of Murakami - he is for sure one of my favourite authors. A few years ago I went to a Q&A with him in London which was as thought provoking as expected!

@charleslaughlin Oh awesome! I read Norwegian Wood when I was 13 and still have the iconic red and green hard covered books. Love that story. I also loved Killing Commandatore too, it is so random lol. I like 1Q84 too. Only one I don't care for much is Kafka on the shore, which is REALLY popular overseas.

@Yukari oh, what a great coincidence! I became enamored of #Murakami when I read The Wild Sheep Chase around 1990 when I was a grad student, but I can’t remember it at all. Then I was in Taipei thru 2020 and started listening to audiobooks: 1Q84, which is now my fave, Killing Commendatore, Hard Boiled Wonderland, Men Without Women (after watching Drive My Car), now Norwegian Wood. The movie version of Norwegian Wood by Tran Anh Hung is one of my favorite films ever.

@smellsofbikes I like his short stories too. Not sure what it's called in English but I love the story of protagonist and his wife robs Mcdonalds. Can't remember the title right now...

@annedrewhu Yeah I read this and Emiko Kawakami is one of the critics of Murakami tropes and I think she is spot on. Still like his books though. Her books are so very unique, I know she is very talented but not exactly my favorite author.

@Yukari 去年このインタビューを読んで面白いと思いました。川上未映子は女性目線から村上先生と議論する。彼女の小説は読んだことありませんが、定立はぴったりだとおもいます。
I read this interview last year and thought it was interesting. It’s a feminist conversation with Murakami moderated by Mieko Kawakami. I haven’t read her books, but I think her argument here is spot on.

@Yukari I love his short stories and "The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle". And magic realism is too narrow a label, I think.

@graingh @charleslaughlin I think the original Drive My Car story was okay, but the movie was brilliant.

@LightHiker "Hard-Boiled" is quite different from any of his other book I find. I've red nearly all of his books and this one still comes to the top for me. I think about the "Encyclopedia stick" - toothpick size encyclopedia all the time still.

@Yukari I love cyberpunk fiction like William Gibson and Philip K. Dick, and Murakami's Hard Boiled Wonderland was recommended to me. The dual existence the book explores is fascinating to me, and I've come to appreciate a slow-building subtlety (I'll begin telling you the story, you'll begin to understand it later) that he seems to have in common with Kobo Abe and Kazuo Ishiguro. I'm definitely eager to read more of his works.

@Yukari Huge fan of Murakami! 1Q84 his masterpiece for me, but so many wonderful others - Pinball 1973, After dark, Sputnik sweetheart, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle of course. One can basically close your eyes & pick one & you'll have a fantastic read
