@wyatt i do value it because it's not only about modern games at all (since you posted about it)
like how i'm currently implementing support for fx4 shaders which hell no game has used since like dx9/10 in 2006 or smth
i want to play any kind of game either modern and from my childhood, and wine is kind of the only way i can do that without windows- Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this.

@navi i personally do not value proton, either. so i was trying to humour you by making the assumption that proton was actually something of value -

@wyatt then they couldn't have implemented drm, so then companies wouldn't use it (and for users, no cloud backups, workshop mods, or achievements)
i hate drm, and by extension, steam, but the issue here is of IP and capitalism, steam comes as a byproduct
i just don't see any merit from trying to split steam from valve when forming any kind of judgment, they can't exist in isolation -

@navi valve could well have made an online store that did not act as a fucking launcher and in-game payment processor. There is a distinction, and steam (the software) still deserves zero respect.
edit: btw, i've never used proton and never felt the urge to do so. -

@wyatt and where did valve get the money to do that from? and why did they spend money on that?
valve doesn't exist without steam anymore, they wouldn't have sponsored wine otherwise -

@navi "steam" didn't fund proton development. "valve" did. -

@wyatt steam did pay for wine/proton development
it was for their own interest (escaping microsoft)? yes, but it still benefited linux gaming a lot, so i have at least some respect -

steam is like internet explorer or even edge, in that its only purpose is to download software that is actually wanted (like a better web browser). It deserves just as much respect as internet explorer (none).
