The problem is more complicated than this.
For example:
People should have been "speaking out" and protesting when Reagan softened the laws for the media.
We live in a world of citizens who lack the ability to think ahead, everything is a response to a crisis, a knee jerk reaction after people are dying due to evil rulers.
Even our healthcare systems lack in preventive medicine.

#Reagan, from a "pro-democracy" point of view, was as bad as Trump. He intentionally undermined the critical-thinking skills that would eventually generate Democratic, i. e. Blue, voters. (You know the thread, https://mastodon.social/@HistoPol/109730219700294592.)
Most of the ideas of both are not from them, but they both are efficient, ruthless executors.
