Proton Says It’s "Politically Neutral" While Praising Republican Party. "It's reasonable to worry that tech companies' backbone for protecting users in this way might soften when they get too politically involved with any one administration," said Andrew Crocker, EFF's surveillance litigation director.vhttps://theintercept.com/2025/01/28/proton-mail-andy-yen-trump-republicans/ #Proton #ProtonMail #AndyYen

(I actually have files syncing elsewhere as I write this, so bye bye Proton...)

Jay Baker (mediaactivist@todon.eu)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Jan-2025 08:07:58 JST Jay Baker @fkamiah17 That's awesome. An interesting difference from them here, too: While, like Proton, mail addresses, senders and recipients remain unencrypted by Tuta, unlike Proton they keep subject lines encrypted alongside attachments, address books, the entire search index, calendars, and even metadata such as notifications.

jonathankoren™ (jonathankoren@sfba.social)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Jan-2025 09:11:02 JST jonathankoren™ @MediaActivist that’s just because they rip out subject line and rewriting it themselves or something. I doubt whatever trick they’re doing works seemlessly for whatever non tuta recipient, and certainly does not work for any non tuta sender.
Relying on a proprietary hack to open standard is not good opsec.

Before you do that... What exactly is Proton doing here that you have a problem with?
Being email? (Cause the concerns regarding header data will the case with all)
Or comparing Democrats and Republicans on Anti-Trust priorities?

Jay Baker (mediaactivist@todon.eu)'s status on Wednesday, 29-Jan-2025 10:53:30 JST Jay Baker @DroidPort @LordsofHardwired @jonathankoren For me? Claiming neutrality in situations of injustice means siding with the oppressor, to paraphrase Desmond Tutu, and I was disgusting by the grotesque "both sides" rhetoric in an era of late capitalism. That's in addition to their overpriced, under-performing services.

Jay Baker (mediaactivist@todon.eu)'s status on Thursday, 30-Jan-2025 18:20:41 JST Jay Baker @storkanisch @fkamiah17 That's really useful, thanks! It is definitely all about threat modelling - balancing daily user-friendly reliable use with chance of raids. Obviously, any activists carrying out anonymous, often illegal acts, will require much more than the average politically aware person needing an email to, say, link their shopping accounts to.

Jay Baker (mediaactivist@todon.eu)'s status on Friday, 31-Jan-2025 01:55:23 JST Jay Baker @storkanisch @fkamiah17 I use some of the more radical options, and have supported a lot over the years, but I wouldn't always recommend all of them all of the time - that's why user-friendly options like Tuta are great (unlike Proton); we don't have to use a sledgehammer to crack a peanut.
