@jimmybuffettfanaccount i think it's the digital arena that's screwed things up, notice how solid the lineart is between these two. Archie has bold black lines whereas IDW was clearly drawn on a computer.

@bleedingphoenix it’s staggering how much worse writing and art have gotten in my lifetime, sometimes I forget about it and then stuff like this slams you right in the face

@jimmybuffettfanaccount a lot of people hate on Archie Sonic for its lows, but man at its highs the art was insane.

to emphasize this, i think the Scourge vs Surge comparison is apt. the first two pages are from IDW, where Sonic first meets Surge, and the third page is from Archie and a final confrontation with Scourge. ignoring the Archie just has better art, the characterization here is quite different. notice how Archie Sonic doesn't need to drop an essay on his copycat.
Ian Flynn wrote both issues, for the record. the difference here is one of time and change of culture.

going to go autismo on something few care about, but i've been thinking about the characterization of Sonic as of late. mainly because i think it is says something about culture.
in the current IDW run and in the movies we've had a lot of insight into Sonic's "philosophy". he's talked about his reasoning for why he does what he does, and the movies have this tragic orphan backstory that serves to relate him to others. i think what i find so interesting about it is that writers feel the need to assign a "backstory" for heroism and doing the right thing. in the games of old Sonic never needed a reason to go be good other than "it's what i've got to do". he has that one moment in Black Knight when he's told he'll go down as a villain in the King Arthur legend and he just does not care because he knows he's right regardless of the legacy he may leave.
i think that's an important distinction in current writing trends, and why it's wrong. if you need a reason to pursue justice, idk what to tell ya. just my two cents.
