WHY does this happen? I wonder how many posts I've missed this way. I could only be seeing half of every conversation for all I know.

@druid Probably happens due to seeing the thread while backend is still fetching some of the replies.
And sadly MastoAPI doesn't allows to have something like placeholders.

@druid @kirby Well there's federation to consider, the frontend does pull everything server has at that instant but it can get more later on, including "upthread".

@kirby @lanodan I would have thought hitting the + button to expand a whole thread would have tried to fetch all the replies anyway... Hmm.

@lanodan @druid this makes more sense than my weird hunch

@druid @kirby Heh, yeah less synchronous/full-view than usenet is.
Which in the end is pretty good because the storage requirements of Usenet are crazy.

@lanodan @kirby Come to think of it it DOES seem biased towards omitting replies from people I'm not following. My understanding of federation is very poor honestly, I thought once an instance had discovered someone it got all of their posts, like usenet nodes getting all posts from a group. I guess not, I guess that would be prohibitively intense.

@druid @kirby Well even with excluding binaries it's still pretty damn high.
