@Eggfreckles If it was just me there are a lot of options. My family makes this all so damned difficult @heymarkreeves
@heymarkreeves @chris SELF-HOSTED SYNCTHING! https://syncthing.net/
(I will see myself out.)
@chris Such a similar journey here: https://chriswiegman.com/2025/01/am-i-doing-computing-wrong/
I too used Dropbox, SpiderOak, and, happily for a long time, ownCloud, until ownCloud threw a billing issue at me. Now it's a household iCloud plan.
I don't want to go Google, want things to be easy for my family to stay secure and backed up, but I don't want to buy more Apple stuff, either.
@heymarkreeves The struggle is real.
I didn’t even mind the bills to host NC… my family just hated it. Final straw with all of it was trying to setup non-Facetime video chat with my mom for the holidays.
@heymarkreeves This sounds familiar to me too. I had my parents using Signal, but my dad gave up on it when my mom passed. He also has his own email domain which iCloud makes dead simple.
In my case I think I just have to remind myself that it isn’t just me… that’s hard with tech, for sure. Apple is kinda the least-bad for that right now though. *sigh
@chris I was so frustrated with text message spam, I got the household & my mom on Signal (which can do video calls). But Signal doesn't work like SMS if cellular data is flakey. And notifications didn't always work. And then I found Bouncer for iOS and just blocked all the spam with keywords.
@heymarkreeves Oof. Yeah. I caved and did the Apple One Premier plan for the family so we all just use Apple Music at this point.
@chris Hate that I'm paying for Spotify for everyone else when I'm happy with my growing collection in Plex. :)
@chris Not today. It's already been a Monday of Windows. I'm so done.
@jnv Oof.. Yeah… Windows would make it work. I’m glad I don’t have any in my office (literally or figuratively)
@Eggfreckles @heymarkreeves That makes sense. In the past I had good luck with Synology photos for that but iCloud is where I would be today.
@chris @heymarkreeves I ended up purchasing 2TBs of iCloud space just to protect the photos my Wife takes from her iPhone where SyncThing is not an option.
