   In an ideal world, we could randomize servers in the Pixelfed app, however, there is a paradox.

   The most performant and trustworthy servers are the ones who've been around the longest, and maintain good moderation, and performance.

   Do we want to encourage users to join smaller servers with less experienced admins, or encourage them to join larger/more stable servers and support account migration so they can find a better long term home?

   It's a tricky situation, but one we need to solve.

     @wilbr Yeah thats a great point, I believe we can improve this a lot, but for now I think this is a good starting point.

     I will be launching a new flagship in partnership with an EU funded non-profit to take the load off pixelfed.social, and I can't wait to close registrations on pf.soc.

     @dansup it doesn't need to be a hidden or confusing choice, just an informed and simple one. It's like shopping for the right product online, people need info and they need to trust that when they make a choice and click the go button they won't get disappointed or nasty surprises. Some may prefer new or established or big or small or special focus etc and that's ok, but badness still needs to be filtered by opinionated moral humans.

     @dansup what are the three main points to consider when choosing a server? Is there a way of ranking or quantifying them?
     In the registration process, the application presents an ordered list of servers with these indexes and lets the user choose one.

     Some important information could be the number of active users, the size of the federation, the quality of moderation (how to measure?).
