Compression can speed things up if your drive bus sucks but your CPU is good.
I don't know about btrfs specifically, but I've experienced this elsewhere.

Someone told me btrfs compression can actually speed things up? And then explained it to me? But I literally can't believe it? How the fuck?
Doesn't compression always slow things down because the CPU has to then decompress the data!?!?
