   Can someone please explain to me like I'm five (or point me to an explainer) what the big Deepseek news is and why it matters?

   Is this good or bad for the Nerd Reich?

   [I take it as given that anything that is bad for them is probably good for everyone else. If I'm wrong on that, corrections welcome.]

   I'm not dumb, just ignorant. I've had my eye on keeping immigrants safe these past few days and can't multitask quite like I used to.

     @kims short version: an eccentric Chinese billionaire set out to try to make something better than ChatGPT, apparently accomplished it with way fewer resources than the U.S. companies are throwing at things, made some breakthroughs, published a paper revealing all the secrets, and showed that you can do what they do for a fraction of the price and resources, which is going to mean that the U.S. companies are going to struggle to raise as much money or will be expected to do much more with less, which means an AI winter might be coming, or that we really can’t compete as well as we think. But also frankly a lot of weird ‘I can’t believe the Chinese can actually do anything’ in this narrative.

     Not the real response you were looking for here but I wanted to thank you for your differentiation between "dumb" and "ignorant" and for openly owning your ignorance.

     Everyone is ignorant of something. I'm ignorant of innumerable things.

     Wouldn't it be cool if everyone could do what you did here?

     Say "I'm ignorant, help me out?"

     And then...how much more cool to get a kind, helpful, honest, ethical and correct as answer?
