It's shorter to type out w instead of 笑 and can be used multiple times like: wwwwww (warawarawarawarawarawara)
Basically, it's the netspeak/online slang equivalent of "LOL" or "lololol" in English.
Since w strung together "wwww" looks a little bit like grass, it can also be pronounced as くさ "kusa" or even just use the kanji for grass 草 to represent the same idea of "lol" or "lmao" -
