A thing that people can do to get media companies to take Mastodon more seriously: click the links.

Kit Rhett Aultman (roadriverrail@signs.codes)'s status on Friday, 24-Jan-2025 09:03:01 JST Kit Rhett Aultman @RandomDamage you know, you're right. But I've been on here, running an instance, since like 2019 or so, and I often don't click the links because I don't see them. And part of that really boils down to...I don't add my news sources to a list and I don't really use lists like I probably should. But if that's me, an admin, I'm sure it's typical for the rest of the user base

Kit Rhett Aultman (roadriverrail@signs.codes)'s status on Saturday, 25-Jan-2025 01:10:40 JST Kit Rhett Aultman @RandomDamage I agree. But as someone who follows a lot of news sites on here and as someone who's tried to use Mastodon for self-promotion, I'm saying that I think we have a tooling challenge that prevents those "thousands, or tens of thousands" from manifesting.

Daniel Taylor (randomdamage@infosec.exchange)'s status on Saturday, 25-Jan-2025 01:10:41 JST Daniel Taylor @roadriverrail I don't think there's a "should" about this one, not really.
It's not like we all need to set ourselves a quota.
I just think we should be aware that when we take an action like following a link to a story, that's a little bit of pressure.
One click is nothing, it won't even show.
Thousands, or tens of thousands, of clicks starts to become a sign that web admins can take notice of.

Daniel Taylor (randomdamage@infosec.exchange)'s status on Saturday, 25-Jan-2025 10:43:08 JST Daniel Taylor @roadriverrail there's certainly issues intrinsic to the federated model at play, but you are right that there are also UI improvements needed.
I only use the web interface for my primary instance (even on mobile), so I am definitely not an expert on what works best
And I don't use lists at all, I just take my feed as it comes
