@mhoye When I was young, my mother regularly got raw milk from a local farm. I've just looked it up and it's still a common thing, especially with organic farms. There are regulations that for it to be sold as such it may not be heated above 40 deg Celsius and not even be subjected to microfiltration. From this I would form the tentative opinion that these tales are dramatized.

I worked in the Caribbean for most of a year way back, and one of my neighbors was a fiftyish-year-old bald man with a big laugh, a bright most-of-his-teeth smile, bit of a pot belly, hands and feet harder than the soles of any boot you've ever owned and as close to no education as mattered. And one day he offered me some milk he'd just squeezed out of a cow that was still there chilling; he had a small fire, and put the bottle in it. He said, "you scald it, or you gonna be sick. _Real_ sick."
