Will current day id Software ever release their engines that came after Doom 3 under free license? What do you think?
- Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: likes this.

@a1ba Isn't id Software basically just a branch at this point?

@a1ba Well at least I kind of gave up hope with Doom (2016) and Doom Eternal not being Linux native unlike previous titles.

@lanodan they still technically own their software, no? Well, I hope they are.

@a1ba Yeah, nothing with id Tech 5… which kind of sucks because I'm sure I'd love to play the more recent Wolfenstein games without having the pain of wine/proton.

@lanodan Rage didn't have Linux build either.

@lanodan and it's a great game, definitely not deserved to be forgotten...

@lanodan to me, releasing their source code is crucial for game preservation. Can you imagine running Doom 2016 on systems in 10 years? Or 20 years?

@a1ba Specially with how recent games are harder and harder to maintain compat layers for.
And there's Y2038 getting sooner and sooner.

@a1ba Yeah with source code you just need one or few random nerds to make it work again, which works pretty well for well known games but even for rather niche FOSS games stuff still continues working 20~30 years later.

@lanodan yeah, like Y2038 is the closest breakage that will definitely happen for most software.
I think modern games probably won't even get a chance to be reverse-engineered, releasing source code (like actually releasing it, not leaking through thirdparties/former employees) is the only way to be sure it won't be an issue to run these games in the future.

@lanodan but of course, that's highly unlikely, even if Ross's campaign on games as a service going kinda rough.

@lanodan yeah, even if it's a niche game, at some point somebody will definitely go and fix it, share it, then it will break again, and somebody else will pick it up, fix and share it.
You know the deal.
