Hi, Justine. The latest change I pushed to the repository finally seems to work. I've received this same post of you through the relay by following the #snac hashtag.
Oh ok I'll keep watching for hashtags that I follow. I only seem to see the hashtags that I follow only if a mutual follower has boosted, commented or liked. I'll give it another day to see if I spot any posts with hashtags I'm following and no relation to any of my followers. Thank you.
One thing I have noticed if you look at this screenshot. Your comment to me gave me a notification and was from you. Then the relay boosted it and I again got a notification from you ??
Its really strange as you can see from your last reply none of the double replies have the boosted by aoderelay . But then when I next look in the notifications they do. See these two pictures. The one without the relay boosts is the 1st then it changes to showing boosts.
Yes; subscribing your #snac to a relay has two benefits: 1) you reach a big stream of posts where you can "fish" those with the hashtags you like, and 2) your posts are also sent to that stream, so that other relay subscribers can receive them. FediBuzz doesn't provide 2.
On the other hand, the FediBuzz concept has the benefit that you only receive those posts you are interested in and not a firehose of data (most of it probably of no interest for you), which is a huge benefit if you have bandwidth restrictions.
I've found out what relaying is useful for: outgoing distribution of your toots. The FediBuzz server doesn't follow you back, so it doesn't receive your toots to send on to its other users.
I've cleared out my "Following Hashtags" menu and I'm now only following from my own users account the FediBuzz URL's. They show up just like before so say the hashtag Linux that I'm following triggers. It shows as #Linux Boosted" which is correct for my users as I'm technically following the account "#Linux" and they are in my people following. Maybe change the menu "Followed hashtags..." to "Relay followed hashtags..." too ? I don't know maybe not ? However if someone does use the relay option then I think it would be better if the "relay name Boosted" could be removed so it looks like a normal post in the users feed.
@grunfink@comam.es@justine@snac.smithies.me.uk Something that's bothering me (and probably Justine) is that I have a feeling that when a toot arrives via a relay, that "boost" should be turned into an ordinary post, so the action of relaying is invisible.
As Justine has found out, if it's not "invisible" you can follow a FeedBuzz tag as an ordinary user and see exactly the same benefits.
I made a new user "relay" and followed him, then made that user follow https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com/actor, but now my main user gets all kinds of randomy boosted posts "AodeRelay boosted", even though my account does not follow AodeRelay directly. Lots of those posts have no hashtags at all.
