What does this even mean? Like if you have a meeting or just hiring non-white men?

@stefan is it really that hard to decipher tho? If in your hiring efforts you consider anything other than skill and experience as qualifications you're gonna get fired over it.
No extra brownie points for their race, gender, sexuality, disability, or growing up poor/disadvantaged. -

@stefan that in itself is a problem because if the position isn't widely advertised you can't be certain you're finding the best candidate
I don't think that problem should be solved with DEI initiatives, but by other means: longer time between job postings and filling the position, made public in several places, etc -

@feld usually, in places I have worked, the non white men barely even find out about the role before it's filled.

@stefan I'm not actually against individual company programs of diversity hiring but it always comes with so much garbage academic political baggage. There has been a real co-option of the entire process since affirmative action to a specific ideology that nobody originally believed in when they passed all this stuff. This maybe sounds kind of oblique but I don't know how to put it into words. Just like you can say black people historically haven't had those advantages that other have so we're giving extra attention in our hiring, that's good and honorable, but then there's super divisive stuff like you need to sign this thing that acknowledges your participation in white supremacy, like an weird racial inversion of forcing you to take the pledge of allegiance in grade school except the allegiance is you are bad. -

@sun that's what every hiring I've been part of has done and it disproportionately hires white men because they are the ones the hiring managers find first.

@stefan it's probably a failure to lump that in with DEI though.
I think it would be easier to attract support from right wing folks to support that if you slapped good branding on it that can only be interpreted as "we want to hire the best we can".
The result of this may very well be a noticeable increase in diversity. But you just can't ever lead with that or you'll get dragged through the mud too easily. It's just too easy to weaponize propaganda then.Another Linux Walt Alt likes this. -

@feld everything you have outlined are often part of DEI initiatives. So that's part of why I'm unclear what the OG post even means.

@stefan I only work for small companies now if I can help it because of this and other crazy junk in big corporations. The example I gave was something they did at Redhat lol. -
