There are quite different approaches to use social Media. First, I look for news sources and built myself a kind of news ticker timeline. This works well after about 500 follows but there are still blind spots. I still miss US and Canadian First Nations and other indigenous news/people or activists from war zones who used Twitter. Occupy Wallstreet did not happen in the Fediverse too at those days. For personal contacts only, a hand full would do. So follows are more important for me than followers. Nevertheless I welcome the development that the Fediverse has undergone.-

And advocate slogans tend to simplify things too much.
