   @avocado_toast @gleick @pluralistic maybe so, but lock-in mechanisms are a serious and recognised phenomena across technology that cannot be discounted. I am one of the cases Doctorow mentions: I emigrated twice and the bog standard social media is the only place I can keep in touch with family and friends. I left Insta this week, but I know it will make my world a little smaller - and what with Covid and general migrant difficulties, it is already rather small 😢

     @gleick @pluralistic One thing I've grown more and more tired of is the apologia for folks who stay on shitty platforms. We're imagining these reasons. All of them. It's all just us imagining the best intentions in people. A portion of these folks, a large portion in fact, stay on these platforms because they like the changes. They like the xenophobia; they like the transphobia; they like the racism. It's best to start facing that reality now.
