Just came from the barangay office after barangay security viewed our CCTV. Last night someone tried to cut and steal our power lines but our security guard chased them away. Since it was quite dark they couldn't identify the culprit but we are taking steps to prevent people from sneaking in on bicycles (because they can't be heard) at night. By the way this is not the first time an attempt has been made.

@agasramirez @pixiecata Yep, it can sell for a good price. They usually collect them first, and once it reached a certain length, they sell it. The price is cheaper but still it's a good price than buying from suppliers.

The buyers are usually small to medium suppliers (so only buy from those you fully trust). They'll sell it for the actual price. And if the customer asks for a discount, they'll agree because the one they planned on giving in the first place are the stolen ones. The customer is none the wiser because well it's a legit product.

It's an endless cycle, and rarely anything done against this underground system because there isn't much complaints. Also, it takes a lot of budget and long-time planning to catch them. They have to infiltrate for months, if not years, to find worthy targets that will cripple their network. And the teams who can do this, and without any leaks or tips, are better given bigger projects like catching foreign spies and traitor Pinoys. 😅

But in fairness, it's much better today than compared to, say, in the 80s and 90s. Back then, stealing cables were done in broad daylight, and the demand was high (and so they actually earn a very govery good price).

@pixiecata If you can, get permission from the PNP and LGU to allow you to install advance types of CCTV (government funded CCTVs are usually low quality) on public places, like poles, so you can get better angles and wider coverage.

This is those times when going through the back door can be useful. 😁 If you go through official channels, it'll not be approved because it can be seen as a bribe for future favours. Everything has to be done off-the-record and no one leaking about it.

Or, at least, get permission to point high-end CCTVs to the streets. AFAIK, we have a law that states we can only point our CCTVs to our immediate territories, and the way it's judged is if it's visible. We can't just point it completly outside, especially the high-end CCTVs. It borders on privacy too for high-end CCTVs.
