     it is a shame that the HEMA clubs in Japan are forced to practice with synthetic blades. you really cannot simulate the bind with anything other than metal

     a friend from one of the fencing schools I go to came back from a trip to Japan last year and he told me the clubs there were not allowed to train with steel feders.
     
     one of the Japanese HEMA club members told him that technically there is a way to import a metal sword, whether real sharp or blunted feder, but you have to write a letter explaining the justification for owning one in Japan. if they deny your application letter, they break your imported steel blade in half and return it to you in two broken pieces.

     @vitalis @japananon @hakui Their laws regarding swords are frankly insane, even during the tokugawa period the laws were more reasonable.
     
     There are only two ways to legally own one: to get a special license as part of a recognized dojo, or to register one as a piece of art to be held decoratively in your house. The latter requires it be a historical blade or manufactured through traditional means by a licensed smith. The former is slightly more lax but not by much.
