My router is getting a bit cranky. I have tried to find some that one can put openwrt on. I've seen some "best of" lists, but can't seem to find the specific models here in Sweden. I only use wifi for my phone, don't need some super duper range nor speed to fry my brain. Can one somehow attach (usb?) something to a wire-only router, to just get some basic wifi? Would that even work in openwrt? Greatful for some suggestions for this non-geek with brainfog. Thank you 🙂

I use it when my dongle dies and waiting for a new one. My dear dh set this up in the living room behind the couch for my tablet.

Sensei (sensei@noauthority.social)'s status on Friday, 17-Jan-2025 02:40:44 JST Sensei @inscius woot.com (Amazon outlet store) sells some cheap refurbished WiFi routers. As it's an outlet store, their inventory keeps changing. Just look for a model that's on the list of supported openwrt or tomato open source firmware.

EvolLove (evollove@noauthority.social)'s status on Friday, 17-Jan-2025 02:43:24 JST EvolLove SO the setup U are going for is router without wifi, cable connection to Ur PC and then some way to use Ur pc as a hotspot for Ur phones?
Am thinking, is there a difference if the wifi signal is emoted from Ur Pc instead of directly from a router?
Was thinking to get one of those tp link without eifi and connect my pc to the power line.
But that would not solve Ur wifi to phone.

Sensei (sensei@noauthority.social)'s status on Friday, 17-Jan-2025 03:17:36 JST Sensei @inscius Depending on the model, reflashing the firmware to openwrt can range from easy to a real pain. Fortunately, you only have to do it once.
