@khm Best is like… Signal is effectively proprietary as a network since it has a history of banning forks/third-party clients *and* you don't really control the software updates.

And I've also seen few people who somehow believes Signal doesn't honors government/law-enforcement requests, even though they're transparent about it: https://signal.org/bigbrother/

      Government Communication
      from @signalapp
When legally forced to provide information to government or law enforcement agencies, we'll disclose the transcripts of that communication here.

@jerclarke @khm Yeah, it isn't an argument against it, although "last connection" can be used to see if it was actively used or not.

And one that's kind of funny is https://signal.org/bigbrother/northern-california-order/ where they reply that they don't have usernames, which was true at the time but not anymore.

Other kind of metadata like messages timestamps and destinations are weirdly missing though but wouldn't be surprised if they're just playing the game of "you're not specifically asking for it, we're not giving it".

Signal still knows nothing about you, but the government still continues to ask us if we do.

@lanodan @khm That link is marketing for how little they are able to give to governments. Yeah they give what they have, but the whole point is they have almost nothing.

Looks like all they hand over the fact that you use signal. Am I missing something?
