Kennedy Express Lanes Reopen, But More Closures Coming This Spring
      from janetfuller
While the expressway's reversible lanes are back to "normal operations," drivers should still look out for temporary lane closures as crews wrap up work, IDOT said.

@WarnerCrocker it’s been decades since I’ve driven into Chicago. There was road construction then but it didn’t bother me much.

The advantage of being a tourist: you walk more places, hire more cabs, and your getting in and out of the city often does not overlap with rush hour, by mere happenstance.

It is a comfortable city to drive IMO. I’d never want to drive in Manhattan or L.A. or Atlanta, many other cities. There is a luxury not being scheduled constrained, being out of the rat race

@Chancerubbage Chicagoans would disagree with you in most respects, especially if you need to traverse the "expressways." If you live in the neighborhoods you learn that there are times of day when driving is more than fine and times of day when it is best to use other methods or just stay put.

In my first lifetime in Chicago (1979-99) I lived without a car in a neighborhood within easy walking distance of what I needed and could "Rent-a-Wreck" or take a taxi if I needed to go further. /more

@Chancerubbage That was a younger person's lifestyle. Now I'm much older, I live further out, have doctors who I sadly need to travel distances to for myself and a relative or two, and the cost-of-living is so vastly different now that I often shop the 'burbs' for prices less affected by city tax burdens. I can literally drive 1.5 miles and save money on fuel, food, and other things just by crossing a street.

You're right though, being a tourist in this town is very nice.

@WarnerCrocker I had a bit of expressway sluggishness entering and exiting even in off hours, but it did not seem harrowing, comparatively. It also it’s a boon to have the CTA about.

@Chancerubbage On the CTA, yes, if you live in the right corridors, and even so, it, like most things, have suffered degradation over time.
